Are you a keen photographer? Do you have an eye for a stunning portrait? Submissions are now open for Gulf Photo Plus' community exhibition, Behind The Portrait.

Portraiture has come a long way from the first daguerreotypes of 1839, as has the definition of the word. Contemporary photography embraces a much wider interpretation of the term than in past centuries, and this exhibition encourages photographers to take a different approach to the portrayal of their subject.

The gallery, which is always thinking of new ways to engage the photographic community in the UAE and wider region, is interested in artists who examine the environment of their subject or rather, focus on the small details - a portrait can be any image that tells a visual story of identity, human or otherwise. Photographers based anywhere in the world are invited to submit their most meaningful portraits, accompanied with a written description of the story behind the image.

Deadline is August 15, 2017. Finalists will be selected and informed by August 23 and their image and text submissions will be exhibited together in the Gulf Photo Plus gallery inside of Alserkal Avenue, Dubai from September 6, 2017. Apply with up to four images at gulfphotoplus.com/opencall.
