Mohammed Kazem engages with the world as a field of continuous movement, to which his practice responds across shifting forms. Light, sound, and space migrate from the intangible to become his materials. “I create from everything, from shadows, colours, coordinates—even the distance between me and you is a medium,” he says.

Letters is an exhibition that takes its cue from Omar Saif Ghobash’s novel Letters To A Young Muslim. It cleverly captures through a range of artists from UAE and Saudi, the predicament of today’s young Muslim.

An exploration and extension of painting as a medium with strong subject matter relating to the social and economic structure of the UAE makes Mohammed Kazem’s most recent show an excellent presentation both conceptually and formally.

Mohammed Kazem's practice and interest in mark making is summarised in a curated show at New York's Aicon Gallery that opens this weekend. 

Portrait of a Nation collates the artwork of 50 contemporary artists from the UAE with a central theme reflecting on their homeland and the influence it has had on their practice. Originally shown in Abu Dhabi in 2016, it is now travelling to Berlin.
