Informal art education in UAE given boost
Campus Art Dubai (CAD) – a weekend school for intellectuals – now has a curatorial partnership with Project Space Art Jameel to give participants a fuller experience. CAD is a six-month course for UAE based artists, writers and curators, designed to develop their practices under the mentorship of leading experts in the field. The sixth edition takes place from October 2017 to February 2018 and applications are open now.
This summer, to mark the new partnership, Art Jameel’s gallery space in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai, will be converted into an experimental summer studio for current CAD members and its alumni.
The communal space will function as a semi-public environment where participants can come to practice, create, research and exchange ideas. There will also be programming, which includes CAD instructor Lantain Xie hosting a four-part reading club focusing on nostalgia, memory and architectures of violence as well as Nadine Ghandour, a UAE based artist, holding two workshops on the subject of drawing from film (one specifically for teenagers).
At the end of the summer, the project space will return to its gallery status with an open studio exhibition on August 26.
CAD 6.0 will begin in October led by Uzma Z. Rizvi, Murtaza Vali and Xie. Held under the title Theme, Format, Mood, Setting it will reflect upon topics relevant to everyday life in the Gulf. This collaboration is part of Art Jameel’s commitment to supporting arts education in the UAE and participants of CAD will be allowed special access to Art Jameel’s research facilities upon the opening of the art centre in 2018.
